“Conversations #2” – A contemporary mobile balances disguise and transparency

Chas Martin November 8, 2026

Conversations #2 is a mobile of six, two-sided abstract masks revealing the interplay of disguise, transparency, and communication. They hold each other in a dynamic balance as they cycle in and out of conversations with each other. Ultimately interdependence is the foundation of social accord, a functional community, and successful government.

This is my most recent in a series of contemporary figurative kinetic sculptures inspired by Alexander Calder. The mobile was designed to react to the slightest air movement. Each unique shape responds by turning first one way, then the other as the whole sculpture rotates. The motion is unpredictable. The effect is hypnotic.

Two previous mobiles include “Perception,” consisting of 3 figures and “Conversations #1,” a large 12-figure mobile. Both display full abstract figures. With Conversations #2, I have scaled down the overall size and focused on faces alone. It feels more personal, more intimate, and more direct.

Size: H 36” x W 60” x D 60”

Weight: 4 lbs.

Materials: steel wire, paper, polymer and acrylic paint

Faces: vary from 9” to 12” tall

Installation:  ceiling height of 9’ or higher is ideal.

See additional mobiles in the series.
